Launch This New 9-Hour Solar-Powered Drone from Your Shoulder
A new small unmanned aircraft system (UAS) boasts something no other has been able to do thus far: continuous flight for 9 hours and all on the clean energy of solar power.
AeroVironment‘s 13-pound Puma AE can be assembled and hand-launched in minutes and requires no infrastructure for launch or landing, making them attractive for frontline use where time and space can be too scarce for the requirements of full-scale drones.
And while it may be some time before the Pentagon is showing off solar-powered tanks, AeroVironment insists these types of solar technology advancements are indispensable for the military.
“This is a critical milestone with far-reaching implications for the many ways small UAS can benefit military, public safety and commercial customers,” said Roy Minson, senior vice president of the Monrovia, CA-based AeroVironment.

The reason energy costs so much is that it’s difficult and expensive to generate. 44% of U.S. electricity comes from -burning plants (which also happen to be the biggest cause of air pollution in the country), with the other 36% divided between wind power, geothermal power, hydroelectric power, etc. All of these methods require resources, maintenance, and scores of employees to be able to function, and the person who gets to pay for it all is you. But, by switching over to home mounted-solar paneling, you effectively eliminate (or at least substantially reduce) your dependence on the city grid. Of course, the panels themselves are still somewhat expensive to purchase, which is why many individuals are taking a different approach. Vivint, Solarcity, and other major solar companies are now offering rentable solar panels. These companies are leasing solar power to customers for a fraction of what it would cost to get energy from the city.

Here comes the sun..! 3 Solar Stocks set to Shine..!
The solar sector has seen an impressive expansion in recent years, with a compounded annual growth rate in installations of 59% from 2007 to 2012. As oil and gas prices rise alongside political calls for clean energy, analysts at Citigroup predict sun-generated energy will be in high demand.
The solid growth and strong demand potential have, however, not been reflected in shares prices in recent years. In fact, it’s been ugly. But that only helps support the case that now is the time to take a closer look.
“Key point, many of the U.S. utilities we have surveyed over the past several weeks have highlighted the need to diversity into other generation sources — it is well understood that gas prices won’t stay depressed forever,” they said in a report Wednesday.
The analysts said they prefer companies in the downstream business, such as project development, distribution and installation, over firms in the upstream market, including panel manufacturers and electrical components suppliers.
“We surveyed over 20 electric utilities in the U.S., [and] one key theme emerged: it has become very difficult to distinguish one panel manufacturer from the other — they all look the same, per respondents. This was not the case in the past,” they said.

First Solar, Inc. is considered the bellwether in the downstream market, and with the downstream names poised for stronger growth than upstream counterparts, this is a company to watch. Additionally, management has made strong restructuring progress and has won several projects in key growth regions, the Citigroup analysts said.

Are These Spinning Blue Cones The Solar Panels Of The Future?
We’re all used to the pictures of roofs or fields covered with solar panels. But what if a new form factor could fundamentally change how solar works? A company called V3Solar has announced a brand new solar panel design–called the CoolSpin–that it says will make power 34% cheaper than the cheapest existing solar panels, putting the output well below the cost of generating even coal (8 cents versus 12 cents a kilowatt-hour, respectively). An independent technical reviewer agrees with the efficiency of their design. Could this be the breakthrough that the solar industry has been waiting for?
A big maybe. It’s certainly a cool looking design. The installations look like blue mushrooms. On top is a layer of lenses, which concentrate the energy coming in up to 20 times. They’re Fresnel lenses, an extra-thin, multipart lens invented in the 1790s for use on lighthouses, which concentrate a small lantern into a powerful beam. Also like lighthouses, the cones rotate. This way they can take the sun coming in from all directions.

These might be the coolest things we have seen in a while…! Now I know that these lights are not solar powered but they do have a timer set to them to make sure the lights go out instead of running on electricity constantly and that is the kind of products we like here on this site. Solar Panel Review takes a gander at the PowerFilm USB+AA Portable Solar Charger. Here is a review from Amazon….The PowerFilm USB + AA charger is probably the best product and design I have seen in terms of AA solar chargers, especially for backpackers. Stores like REI and EMS need to carry this charger. Basically, this is 2 devices in 1. It is a solar charger for NiMH batteries (2 NiMH Sanyo 2000mAh batteries come with the product). It is also a voltage transformer that takes the 2.4v of the NiMH batteries and ramps it up to 5v allowing you to charge a USB device (like a cell phone or iPod) using the charged batteries, even when it is NOT in the sun. This means that you can lash the unit onto your backpack or car dash without having to tether your phone to it all day, and then draw from the stored energy in the batteries at night. I charged two batteries in the sun with no problem and then charged an iPod Nano 2G while the solar panel was folded up, and it work perfectly.

Solar Panel Review takes a look at some swimming pool heaters..! The SunHeater Solar Pool Panel is a great way to heat your pool for free..! I bought this for our 12 x 20 Intex pool to extend the swim season for my two boys in Michigan. Our pool has limited sunlight, and we have used a solar pool cover for the last two years, but it didn’t help much. This heater has been a GREAT addition for us! During our most recent startup, we filled the pool and the water was 57 degrees…after three hot sunny days in the 85 degree range, the pool temp was up to 88! For larger pools the manufacturer recommended that we get two of these, but we opted to get one and see if we liked it and honestly our water was on avg. 12 degrees warmer. I was amazed how well it worked. We used it all summer and we took it down and are storing it for winter.

Solar Power Review is a big fan of the Floatron Solar Powered Natural Pool Cleaner - Algae free – No chemicals..! Having a pool as a young boy I saw my dad work & work to maintain out family pool. He was always out in the summer sun & heat slaving away to keep our pool clean & swimmable. It was painful to watch. He always had to mix up chlorine every night before he went to work & I had to throw it in the pool just to keep it clean. He would get home from work in the morning & check the ph levels to let u know if we could swim or not..?

Solar Panel Review - Go Power! Weekender SW Complete Solar and Inverter System is very nice. We bought the Go Power Weekender solar and inverter package, so we could keep the batteries charged on the RV, and also have the ability to run the TV at night as well as the microwave without running our generator. The kit came with everything we needed to install the solar panel and the 1500 watt inverter including a 30 amp transfer switch. This was actually a very nice addition because it makes it so when the inverter is on, all of the outlets in the RV still work just like when we are plugged in at an RV park. The solar has kept the 2 6 volt batteries that we have on the RV topped up even on fairly cloudy days.

This is a great idea for all homes across the world. This attic fan will ventilate up to 1,900 square feet of space. That is a large area. Most homes aren’t over 2,000 square feet combined, so having a powerful attic fan will help reduce energy costs. Also, it being powered by the sun means that it won’t cost you anything to operate it on a full time basis. Attic fans are equally important in the summer time to reduce heat gain as well as winter time to reduce moisture build-up. Installation is pretty basic. This is the Sunforce 50013 1-Watt Motorcycle and Powersports Solar Battery Charger. It is the best way to get a trickle charger without having to plug it into an outlet non-stop. I had my Harley plugged into a trickle charger for most of the year so I decided to try this little 1 Watt Solar Powered trickle charger and it worked great. It was fast and efficient.
