Solar energy jobs grow in Austin, TX..!
AUSTIN (KXAN) – The solar energy industry is booming, especially here in Central Texas.
The amount of solar panel installation companies in Austin has jumped from four to more than 40 in the last eight years.
Lighthouse Solar started with two employees and now has 25.
The company believes solar panels will become apart of the mainstream energy options in the near future.
Currently, residential homes are leading the way for solar panels.
Austin Energy gave 40 percent more rebates to homeowners in 2012 than the previous year.
“We believe in what we’re doing but we also see the signs that there is exponential growth,” said Stan Pipkin of Lighthouse Solar.
That’s one reason the Austin City Council created a solar power committee.
The committee suggested the Council focus on commercial buildings, giving incentives to companies who want to go solar.
Before rebates, it can cost businesses and homes tens of thousands of dollars, but as the industry grows that cost is dropping.
For now, discounts are pushing panels forward and helping the industry establish itself.
“The incentives that foster this industry keep it local and keep it strong, gradually can phase out while we increase the amount of solar that’s adopted both commercially and residentially,” said Pipkin.
